The Late 1970's
By the time Mr Evans (that's me) arrived at the school in April 1976 the completion of the new classrooms, now housing year 1 to 3 was just being completed but most of the children were in hutted classrooms. There were 12 classes which changed to 14 the following September when I had my own class. Until then I was a floating teacher for a term covering everybody else but mainly the deputy Mr Fry. The following photographs show the very successful sports teams and in 1978/9 we achieved the first, winning both football trophies, the cricket and the athletics. There weren't the many sports we offer today. Here are some of the highlights I found in the archives at school.
If you can give me the names of people on the photographs I'll put them in.

Many children ask about the first time Westfield won the Athletics Cup, so I found this in the school archives and have printed it here. It would have been in the school newspaper which Mr Rendall did with the help of children. It was called 'Contact' and was popular with staff, parents and pupils. |
I remember this production well, persuading the Deputy Mr Torrington to take part along with Mr Rendall, Mr Bird and myself (Mr Evans). To think I did it before Peter Jackson made millions with his trilogy of Lord of the Rings. See this photograph in colour at the bottom of the page. You may be able to identify more people. Many were in my class that year. Mrs Windsor did the production with me. |
A letter from the Royal Palace was received in 1977 after the school sent drawings to her. I think they were from the reception children. Were you one of them? |
