The 1980's
The 1980's saw a big increase in the size of Westfield and Autumn 1981 there were 475 pupils on roll.
The start of the year in 1982 saw the school closed until the 18th January because of the weather (snow). We were due to open on the 12th, much later than now.
21st April 1982 - A police day when school had police vans, officers and police dogs in school for the day.
24th January 1983 - After a meeting with county 68 places were offered to new pupils. This meant that 19 new families were not to be accommodated. (This was later to escalate into picketing outside of school which drew media attention).
22nd March 1991 - The retirement of Mrs Maureen Lynes as Head of the school. She had been Head for 30 years and had seen the school grow from less than 100 pupils to one of the largest in Avon with over 470 pupils.
(postscript: Mrs Lynes passed away in December 2007)
Sadly there are no records after this time as log books are no longer kept. If you wish to read tthe ones we have in more detail please visit the school. Meanwhile enjoy the history in photographs.
