I have been reading the log books associated with the school since it first opened as an Infant School. I have taken some of the quotes with their dates and put them here. The log books are kept at school in the library. Words in italics are my comments.

Log book entries

1922

July 3

This school was opened this morning at 9.00 a.m. by the headmistress, Sarah Ann Abbott (Mrs).

Thirteen children presented themselves as scholars but as four of these were under the age of four years only nine were entered on the registers and marked.

September 13

The school nurse sent by the county visited the school this morning to examine the children’s heads.   There were no cases to report to the parents for all their heads were clean.

October 30

A very cold snowy morning.  Consequently the “under fives” did not attend in great numbers.  One child has whooping cough, another the mumps.

1923

January 18

Visit of Miss Wollaston, HM Inspector.

One child, Rose Lapham, has gone to the hospital to undergo an operation with her tonsils.

This is the first mention by name of any child at Westfield School.

April 13

Attendance very bad owing to chickenpox.  Percentage of children for week 62.5.  Have noted cases to Dr Savage, County Medical Officer.

April 16

Received notice from Dr Savage to close school for three weeks.

July 13

The weather seems to have taken a change for the temperature has been very high the last week.  It has been 90 degrees in school with the blinds down and all the windows open.  It has been nearly impossible to go out into the yard in the sun.

July 18

A half holiday was given this afternoon on the occasion of a visit of HRH The Prince of Wales to the town and district.

July 19

A half holiday was given this afternoon as the first annual gymkhana of the Midsomer Norton and District Schools Games Association was held at Midsomer Norton.

This association survives today and this is the earliest record I can find anywhere.

1924

April 1

We begin a new school year today.  Two children being eight years of age have left this for a senior school.  New classes have been formed.

Interesting to note here that the school year ran from April 1st.

October 28

School closes today for the remainder of this week as the school is needed for General Election purposes tomorrow (Wednesday).

Westfield Primary School is still used for all elections.

1925

July 14

A party of thirty children from this school will visit the Zoological Gardens at Bristol today.  The registers will not be marked.

I wonder how they travelled that far was it by coach or horse drawn?

November 27

Have closed this school this morning for two weeks owing to great number of cases of measles.

December 14

Reopened school this morning.  The attendance is still very, very bad.  Only eighteen children presented themselves out of a possible sixty five.  There are nine fresh cases reported.

1926

April 13

Miss Evelyn Parsons, the teacher who has been here on supply, is now appointed here permanently at the salary of £93 per annum.

August 30

Miss Ivy Langley has been appointed teacher here.  She is eighteen years of age and has attended the County Secondary School until twelve months ago.  Since then she has been a student teacher.

1929

April 24

We close today for two days as it is Midsomer Norton Fair.  This has been the custom for many years.
